Alex Ristorante, Lecce: When the Sea Delivers and New York Approves
A couple of months ago, deep in the Baroque heart of Lecce, we sat down at Alex Ristorante expecting a solid seafood meal. What we got was something closer to a quiet revelation.
Food highlights
We start in this part of the world with the tempura gamberini. Gallipoli prawns are lightly battered, hot, sweet, and impossibly clean. There is no greasy aftertaste, and no heavy breading fighting the shellfish. Simply, there is pure, elegant crunch. Right behind them came the tartars, precise and restrained. Moreover, this food demonstrates careful technique. Then the house brought out what they do best. The tagliolino. Moreover, fresh lemon pasta, scampi and Gallipoli prawn tartare, and stracciatella balance the dish. The citrus lifted rather than dominated.A few more scampi on the side for good measure. It was one of those dishes. That makes conversation stop for a few bites, because talking feels like a distraction. We had beautiful wines with it.Thoughtful pours that actually belonged next to the food rather than competing with it.
Dessert was gelato that tasted like someone in the kitchen actually cared, followed by those little after-dinner chocolates that somehow managed to be both refined and generous. The kind of finishing touch that tells you the place isn’t just running a kitchen; it’s running a complete experience.
Food quality in New York
Look, I’m from New York. Moreover, We’ve seen whole spectrum—places that charge Michelin prices for mediocrity and places that deliver far above their stars. Alex sits comfortably in that second category. The cooking was clean, confident, and deeply respectful of the food ingredients. No unnecessary theater. Just excellent product handled by people who know what they’re doing. In our book, that’s Michelin-one-star level or better, whether the guide has gotten around to saying so or not.
We left already talking about the next visit. Some restaurants you remember fondly. A few you start planning the return trip for before you’ve even finished the espresso. Alex is one of those.
If you find yourself in Lecce with an appetite and any standards at all, go. Order the prawns, get the tagliolino, and let the kitchen do the rest. You won’t be disappointed.
